Gomes Freire Square

A tribute to the doctor and politician “Gomes Henrique Freire de Andrade”, who was born in Mariana in 1865.

It was called “Largo da Cavalhada” and “Largo do Rocio” due to the horse drinking trough installed in 1747, which still exists today. Until the mid-20th century, it was called Independence Square.

Through successive renovations, it adopted various styles, including a lake, bridge, bandstand, gardens, and geometric flowerbeds.
