Square / Sé Church

In 1747, the area bordering the “Nossa Senhora da Conceição” Church became “Largo da Matriz”, based on the urban layout designed by José Fernandes Alpoim, installing other symbols of colonial power, such as the fountain and the pillory.

The “Largo” underwent several transformations, eventually housing a cemetery, soon transferred to the churchyard of “Capela São Gonçalo”.

Today it is officially named Cláudio Manoel da Costa square in honor of the poet and inconfidant from Mariana.
