chamber house and jail

Listed since December 19, 1949, Book of Tombo (Process no. 0414-T, Registration no. 345, Book of Fine Arts), the Casa de Câmara e Cadeia de Mariana has a project (risk) authored by the Portuguese José Pereira dos Santos, dated in 1762.

Its construction began in 1768, when it was purchased by José Pereira Arouca and ended 30 years later, in 1798. Some finishes, however, were completed around 1802.

The Prison remained in this building until the beginning of the 1970s. After having ceased its function as cells (septic tanks), the ground floor of the building gave way to the City Hall.

In 1996, the Executive Branch began to carry out its activities in an independent building. The building continued as the headquarters of the City Council.

Between the years 2019-2023, the building was closed for general restoration and was delivered on August 2, 2023.
